Liverpool Saga

The Liverpool Saga is a people's poem, organised by BBC Radio Merseyside and written by the people of Liverpool to celebrate the 800th birthday of the city.

Our very own Mersey Poet, Roger McGough, wrote the opening and closing verses of this 800 line epic, whilst the other 792 lines were written and submitted by Merseysiders themselves.

From the first tentative scratch of the pen
To the keyboard’s final breathless amen,
One poem. A patchwork of laughter and tears.
Eight hundred lines. Eight hundred years.

800 years, oh what stories to be told
By the people young and old -
The bad times, the good times, tears and laughter.
The next 800 memories are left to the young to tell thereafter.

The Liverpool Saga launched in September 2007 at St. George's Hall, where the full poem was read aloud by Roger McGough and others.
